Nerve Blocks
Greater Occipital Nerve (GON) block injections use small amounts of local anaesthetic, with or without steroids, injected into the back of the head where the greater occipital nerves are. These nerves may be involved in headpain, and blocking them can help reduce symptoms. The injection can be given on one or both sides.
GON block injections may offer a few weeks of relief for some people, especially if other preventive treatments haven’t worked or are not suitable due to age or pregnancy. They may also treat prolonged migraine attacks. Only headache or pain specialists should perform these injections.
